Tweet Mama Don’t Take My Kodachrome Away! Juried Portfolio Show at Rayko Photo Center Through January 21st | SFsthetik | SFsthetik

Film. So 20th century! But to purists still the only really pure, wordly, ethereal and beautiful medium. Kind of like audio purists who still love the sound from a turntable and a vinyl record album. With almost every popular camera now digital, the purists still buy film cameras, buy their choice of film, and won’t shoot digital. Yes, it was the name of a great Paul Simon song. Lets sing! (lyrics) Kodachrome, you give us those nice bright colors, You give us the greens of summers, Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, oh yeah! I got a Nikon camera. I love to take a photograph. So, Mama, don’t take my Kodachrome away. Mama, don’t take my Kodachrome away. Mama don’t….. Hey Paul, you never explained. Why did Mama want to take your Kodachrome away?

Sadly, Paul, and all of the photographers who thought that Kodachrome was the best film ever made, last year Kodak decided to retire Kodachrome. Kodak is taking Kodachrome away. And this month, the final rolls of Kodachrome will be processed. Film? Cameras don’t need film! It’s all digital. Why bother? Millions of professional and amateur photographers have bothered to shoot Kodachrome, introduced by Kodak in 1936. Even more keep their film cameras and still shoot film today.

Now, through January 21st, 2011  the Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco will pay tribute to Kodachrome with a juried exhibition of more than 25 Kodachrome Show Artists. If you bring the song, everyone can dance! Until they get so tired of hearing it, you’ll be thrown out. Enjoy.
